For eight exciting years, between 1980 and 1988, the "Monument" was the place where the "Tour of the Moon" took place, the biggest stage race of the popular American Coors International Bicycle Classic.
During its best days, the Coors Classic attracted the top teams and the most famous cyclists in the world, becoming the U.S. national tour and the fourth most important stage race of the year after the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta.
In 1981 and 1985, cycling legend Greg Le Mond won the Coors Classic, other famous participants were Eric and Beth Heiden, with Beth winning the women race in 1980.
In 1984, instead, the cinema was interested about the track with the movie “American Flyers”, starring Kevin Costner, inspired by the Tour of the Moon and shot on location in Mesa County.
