Tivoli is a scenic hillside town located in the Monti Tiburtini. It lies on the banks of the River Aniene and counts among its most famous attractions the gardens and fountains of the Villa d'Este.
Today's stage starts from Tivoli and proceeds northwards to Palombara Sabina. It crosses into the Rieti province and takes you to S: Giovanni Reatino. After the crossing of Rieti, there's the climb to Monte Terminillo, or rather to Sella di Leonessa, which lies at an altitude of 1894 m above sea level. At the bottom of the descent, you cross into the Umbria region (Perugia province) and proceed towards Monteleone di Spoleto. There is a first climb to Forca Capistrello (1211 m) and another one to Forca Cerro before the descent to Spoleto. You then have to run a circuit of that city before the finish.
Quite a rough stage. In Sella di Leonessa, you come very close to the 2000-m mark of the  Monte Terminillo. After the steep descent to Leonessa, there is another climb, this time to Forca Capistrello and then another downhill stretch until Valnerina. From there, the road ramps up again until Forca di Cerro and includes a section where the gradient reaches 17%. Descent to Spoleto, where there is a flat-profile city circuit to complete before the finish.
